Becoming a Plastic Surgery Nurse

People who go into nursing say that it is a very rewarding career and they are glad that they chose this as their career. If you have thought about going into nursing, it is probably because you want to help people and are kind and caring. As many of you may know, there are many different specialties in the area of nursing. Having this option makes nursing a great field for anyone and allows for each person to be involved in a specific area that interests them.

One of these specialized areas is in plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is used to repair, restore, and improve parts of the body. This may not just be someone who wants a facelift for the heck of it, it may mean someone recently broke their jaw and needs reconstructive surgery. Or, perhaps someone has something on their body that they are self conscious of, it can be removed through means of plastic surgery. A plastic surgery nurse takes care of patients before, during, and after their surgery. They act as an extra pair of hands for the surgeon during the operation. This may mean handing instruments to them, or even assisting in suturing wounds. Before the operations this type of nurse may asses the patients or instructs them about how to prepare for the surgery. Afterwards, they may give information about follow-up care. In order to become a plastic surgery nurse, there are a few things you must do first. Just as with about any and all specialized nurses, you must first become a registered nurse (RN). RN’s generally have a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from an accredited four-year college. During college, you will take math and science classes that deal mainly with biology and human anatomy. Most colleges will allow for you to take extracurricular courses that are aimed at different specializations of the nursing field. Taking these classes can help shape your degree to be oriented towards one specialization than another. Once you have your Bachelors of Science in Nursing, you may be required to do a few years of experience in that field, which means you may be required to be an intern for several years. You will want to look for medical institutions that practice or offer plastic surgery to patients. This can help you gain experience in the plastic surgery field. Having real world experience in your specialization can help you get a job in the field you want. You will want to check with which ever state you wish to practice in so you can get the proper licensing. Licensing requirements may be different from state to state and may not recognize another state’s licensing. Once you have made sure you have the proper licensing to be an RN in that state, you can apply for certification through the Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board (PSNCB). After receiving your certification, you will need to renew your certification almost every three years. Becoming a nurse of any kind means that you can help people over come illnesses and other diseases. You may work with children, and you may work with senior citizens, but no matter who you are working with you are making a difference in their life.
